Tacky Turkey Day

This year my friends and I celebrated a small Thanksgiving Celebration a bit early. I decided to go tacky and create a bunch of hats and banners for the occasion. Brandon cooked and carved his first turkey. All and all it was a very successful and fun day!

I created this little video to get my students excited to create the covers of their visual journals. I used my iPhone and the hipstamatic app to create the images used in the video. It was a fun new twist and it created a challenge for myself to use a different format rather than just the regular camera.

Originally I had added quite a few transitions in the step by step section, but after reviewing took them out in order to allow time for students to read and take in what they were seeing. I'm happy with the results and excited to create more of these little demos for use in the classroom.

Brandon and I were fortunate enough to be able to celebrate the wedding of two amazing people. Christie and Brian! The night began with a spooky cocktail hour, an amazing ceremony and meal, and ended with dancing into the night!

My good friend Christie is getting married this Halloween. We had a pumpkin carving party at our house to make her table centerpieces and decorations for her reception. What a blast! 25 pumpkins were carved and they all look great!

Used my grandmothers recipe tonight to make a banana bread for my good friend and fellow art teachers breakfast wedding shower in the morning! We have this awesome built in mixer on our counter top, that I had to take a picture of. It's definitely a feature that I love about this quirky house!

What a great day! Beautiful weather and nothing too crazy on the agenda. Just what I needed. Continued working on my oval piece, that I stretched on an embroidery hoop. I'm also becoming addicted to the Hipstamatic camera app on my iPhone! I can't wait to see what will happens when I finally upgrade and get one with a flash.

So busy this week! Coached Girls on the Run this morning and our lesson for the girls was all about slowing down and taking a minute or more for ourselves. To re energize our minds, bodies and hearts. Maybe its the overload of technology and media, surrounding us wherever we go. Being so visual I feel I may be super sensitive to this, but most of us don't take that minute to ourselves. I have filled my schedule and am trying to meet a bunch of deadlines, so I slowed down today, made a list and got through it by putting some other things to the side (not to be forgotten though). One task at a time, seemed to do the trick!

GET SPARKED!!!!!

Check out the show at the Del Ray Artisans gallery! I co-curated this show and we are super excited with the turn out! We had a fabulous opening reception. It will be showing until October 30th, so check it out if you have time!

DRA artists partnered with the SPARK Organization to showcase the Get Sparked process. A call for artists went out in July for artists interested in participating. Those who signed up received a piece of writing (poems and short stories) written by a member of the SPARK group. Each artist was free to interpret the writing as they saw fit and create a piece of artwork in response. The results were fantastic! (PICTURE TO COME). The show is grouped according to the inspiration writing piece, seeing all the different interpretations, how they differ and how they are similar is just awesome! This idea can work in reverse as well, the artwork serving as an inspiration to the artist.

Every Angel

Every angel is terrible. They like to remind us who we are, who we’ve been, show us who we might become if we could muster the energy to try again. For this we hate them, because part of our nature is not wanting to know the truth even as we seek it.

Define them as you will: heavenly creatures, ghouls from the depths, figments of an imagination poisoned by church-fed guilt. Angels exist, and they’re out to get you.

Don’t believe me? What about that time walking toward the park, when you stepped right over the legs of a greasy man slumped along a painted wall? The kind of man you normally don’t notice, but the deep blue façade made you look. You thought, he’s drowning and he doesn’t even know how to swim. Remember the tiny pricks that crept up the nape of your neck as you kept walking? How your breath quickened and suddenly you felt transported to the room where, ten years earlier, you’d looked your withered father in the eye and said, No I did not come home to help you? You flinched at the sound of that girl’s voice, spiteful and small. Tried to erase the image as you jaywalked across the avenue. You wondered why the scene came to you, blamed randomly firing neurons, as if science could deliver all mystery to its rightful place.

Yes, I’m saying that man was one. What he looked like is incidental. You maintained stride, pushed away the unknowns, but he’ll return. They are quick to disguise, angels, which makes sense. They couldn’t do their work otherwise.

NEW WORK!

Layering has become an obsession. I have begun looking at everything in my world in a new light. "Can I use this to print with?" "How can I use that in a painting in an interesting way?" I was waiting in the cutting line at the local art/craft store and caught a glimpse of this embroidery hoop. I was struck with the idea of using this as a stretcher for canvas. I stretched it, added gesso and was off. So far I'm very pleased with the results.

I started a few more pieces as well. Trying to push the boundaries with materials, and not getting stuck in doing the same thing over and over is tough. Not that there is anything wrong with doing the same thing over and over, I just need to stay interested and motivated. The other question I keep coming back to,when working is to know "When is the work finished?"

These are experiments with modeling paste, and using ink and pastels in the art making process. And working with a more concrete image. I'm very excited about this large flower piece!

Dyeing fabric! I use so much fabric in my work, it's time I start to dye my own, and figure out how to personalize it a bit more! This attempt was semi-successful. I used RIT dye powder, hot water and solo cups. I experimented with white cotton broad cloth, unbleached muslin, and printed cotton quilting fabric. I found the best results were on the muslin and printed fabrics. Wear gloves! My hands and nails are still stained brown.

Little Forest Animals

These little creatures are going the start of my forest collection idea. I'm hoping to create forest creatures in mixed media orginals and am also working on the idea of turning them into a three dimensional shelf decoration type art work. I have made a bird prototype, and hope to solve the design problems I'm having by the end of the weekend.
The first one I love- but not as happy with the black around the beak- and it's the demo for the legs, which I hope to use real sticks for. The second one came out a bit goofy looking, but Ginny the Dog LOVES it!
I have added some in progress photos below!

Disregard her haircut- I gave that a shot myself too. I don't think I will be going into the grooming business anytime soon.

Art Market!

I will be participating in the DRA Art Market this year in the months of August, September and November. I'm super excited to be part of these events, but also nervous. Also through DRA I will be co-curating a show that incorporates writers and artists working together to inpsire and respond to eachother work. More to come on this as we go forward with the details!

My goals for this month are:

Continue to train for the VA Beach 1/2 marathon in September

Be inspired and create

Complete the three unfinished paintings in the basement

Work on the setup for my art market booth (suggestions welcomed)

As for school we will be having our annual art walk in May. It is a great thing to see all the happy faces of the students showing off thier creativity to thier family and community members!

I went on an artmaking frenzy this weekend. The weather is definilty inspiring me to keep creating! It has however made the allergies flare up. It was 80 degrees today and beautiful- Brandon opened all the windows and coming home to a house full of fresh air is just awesome!

This past weekend I went to the "Rock and Roll and I Like It" show at the DRA gallery. There was some great work there!

My cousin Beth (flyersquad) submitted three silk screen posters, and they all were juried in! Way to GO BETH!!! I atttached some pictures show below.

A Productive Day

Tried out Zumba for the second time tonight. What a great way to let go of worrying about what you look like and just have some fun. I am completely uncordinated and feel like all I do is jump up and down. I felt great after. It was great to come home at a reasonable hour, get dinner ready and then actually get some art work done! A step to being more balanced.

I finished some new letters that spell "ART". I posted them on etsy, but love them so much- I may make a set for my studio.

Back on track

My thoughts and prayers are with all the people in Japan and Libya and all the other areas of conflict and need right now. All the images and news of what people go through everyday, has reminded me of how important it is to be thankful for all the good things in our lives.
I finally just put on my shoes and went for a run today. It wasn't easy, but it felt great. Getting back into shape needs to be a priority, but it is such a struggle for me to find a balance. I tend to become completely obsessed with either going to the gym or painting and creating or reading... but I need to find a way of incorporating all of it together. That's my goal and what I need to do for myself. The spring weather is just fantastic, even when it rains. It just makes my mood brighter and my days happier!

For my 30th, Brandon got me a stereo for my studio space, and loaded a hard drive with tons and tons of awesome music!

Shabby Chic inspired bird picture frame! I'm completely addicted to painting on these frames! So much fun!

I finished this piece last night. I originally had two girls on it, but it just wasn't working for me at all. I painted over them and was drawn back to using flowers. I used some charcoal to add the branches as a finishing touch, and am very happy with results!!

First Etsy Sale!

I am super excited! I created the new etsy shop and sold the HOME letters. I attached self-leveling hooks on the back and am excited to get them shipped out on Saturday morning. I'm also working on creating a two new pieces for a friend from high school. I have them almost done, but am thinking they need a little something else. It's hard when you get to the point where you feel like you are almost finished, and don't want to go overboard.

If I could find some more honeycomb, that would make the week! I'm going to have to search the backyard for some this weekend. It makes great texture, but the more I use it the more it is deteriorating.

Friday is almost here, well I guess it's midnight so it is here. My goal for creating something every day has been reached, now I need to tackle balancing adding in going to the gym or a walk at least three times a week, with out giving up on my art to become obsessed with that.

Balance is maybe the toughest thing about be a responsible adult! Life is great though.

Also I think I figured out the eye problem on my girl. I titled it "Imagination".

Creative Monday

Today was a day of new ideas! I had the whole evening to myself, and had a great time creating and watching the Bachelor finale! Having these letters that needed to be worked on, I treated the surface as I have been treating my canvases. What a blast! I think I would like to do more of these letters for children's gifts. I also tried using distress ink on them to create a finished look, and was very pleased with the results. I'm still working on photographing, and finding something that works best for the work I'm creating. When I get there- updating my etsy site will be next on my list.
The most exciting idea of the day, is a collaboration project my cousin and friend are going to work on! We also created a blog zipcodespark.blogspot.com, to use to track our progress and document our work. The blog is up, but hasn't been posted too yet, that will come.

I took some pictures from around my studio. Brandon and I are working on creating an organized space that works for me. I think we are going to need to buy some shelves. I should start posting before and after photos.

Spring is in the air!

This is a honeycomb I found on the ground yesterday while helping with some lawn work. I used it to print on a painting I'm working on. The results were fun! I'll be on the lookout for honeycombs from now on. Hopefully there won't be any bees around!

Artist Trading Cards

An art teacher friend and I are going to have an artist trading card even with some of our students! We are so excited, and so were the kids. I showed them a bunch of different examples I found from a variety of online websites. We then talked about what makes our school a great place to be. I loved that art was one of the positives in thier week.

Hanging in my room is a bulletin board, and on it I try and incorporate fun, inspiring quotes. I think they are getting it!

Art Journaling

I'm trying to get back into the habit of using a visual journal, and incorporating it here on my blog. It's all a bit intimidating, as I'm not a writer but always feel awesome after I do write down something that is going on in my head.

I started today, Ash Wednesday by just writing down my goals. After talking with a good friend this morning about what to "give up". She told me about what a preacher she had listened to once said, instead of giving something up, add something positive to your day. So each day of lent I'm going to try and walk, do one thing creative, and write one good thing about life.

Weekend Inspiration

I started experimenting with tissue paper. Although I dyed my hands black last night at midnight by adhering the tissue paper with water and wet acrylic paint, I'm very excited about the texture it can create. I'm working on coming up with pieces that reflect a submission due in April for the Somerset Studio magazine. The theme is to be inspired by Alfred Hitchcock. I'm not sure where this is going but it is nice to have somthing to work for.

Frustrated with having to go to work and not being able to stay home and work on my art, I used that energy to create a piece that was out of my comfort zone this evening. I'm so inspired and in awe of artists who use portraits in their work, and I have always avoided it, unless it was required for an assignment. I realized this is a bit ridiculous, considering I ask my students to self-portraits all the time. The older they get a bit of fear begins to show on their face. At some point as a child we lose that ability to just let loose and have fun! We talk about how things "don't have to be perfect" daily in my classroom, so I figured I should just take my own advice and "go for it!" and have fun.

I started going through a ton of scrapbook patterned paper I have, and found a sheet that was covered in inspirational quotes and sayings. I am thinking of adding text into this piece with a possible image transfer, or hand painted lettering. Here is where I am so far! Can't wait to return home from work tomorrow and continue working on it!

Creating something beautiful everyday!

My new work has been focusing on incorporating texture and image transfers. I have been using gel medium and creating multiple layers. These have been fun and free! After reading some books on different ways to create interesting background texture and images, I couldn't wait to begin trying them. For this piece I began with a blended green acrylic background. Then began adding other cool colors with a palette knife and various brushes. The birds in this piece were a "happy accident". I wanted to do an image transfer with a toner image copy, I had created using photo editing programs. The tranfer wasn't successful and I pulled the whole piece of paper off. What was left was the outline of the bird and I accented this using gel medium, and it became the inspiration for the rest of the piece.
Working on this 16x20 canvas I realized I want to work larger than this and begin experimenting with interesting shapes.
Maybe start stretching my own canvas again, and experiment with different gessos. These two pieces have also inspired me to begin working on blogging and sharing my work with others. It's so easy to get lost in the shuffle of everyday life. Finding a couple hours to work on my art, and create something beautiful is definilty a heart warming and fulfilling addition to my life.

This work was created in response to an activity done in my latest graduate class. The idea is to push yourself out of your comfort zone as an artist. I have been focusing my work lately much on the idea of color and organic images. I decided to scan in a figure drawing done in class, and collage over it using matte medium, black acrylic paint and religious iconic images. I chose to create the entire piece in black and white. I would like to bring some of this back into my other work, and again start incorporating some religious imagery. The third piece has been altered in photoshop.

I am starting to experiment with this Japanese form of printing with my 5th grade students. It has definitely grasped their attention and they have been having a blast. I'm going to use real fish soon, and see how it works out in my own work. I used a monotype water based ink for this print, and have begun to add some hand coloring using colored pencils.

The monotypes shown here were done with a variety of media from Oil Paint to Speedball water soluble printing ink. They also use a variety of Monotype process such as dark field technique, light field technique, trace monotypes, colored pencil and Mylar, and other water soluble materials.

I am so excited about this new technique. I used Prismacolor watercolor pencils on double sided Mylar. For the images I used photographs that I took while vacationing in the keys. To transfer I used a press set at 2-4.5 it seemed to be the perfect amount of pressure to transfer the vibrancy of the colored pencils.

I hope to continue this series and use four or five more photos that I have to capture the culture of Key West.

This print was started with a monoprint. I layered pieces of a previous flower print and then used different textured paper, oil pastels to create layers. I then carved a small lino plate and added the purple flower overlays.

This so far is my favorite alternative process! The contrast that you are able to achieve by using a digital negative and the sun as your processor is just amazing. I have done many more cyanotypes, however these are my favorites. I am interested in doing more portraits using this method, I love the way the skin tones expose. They are also challenging as to not wash out the hightlights of the entire face. This portrait was the most successful in achieving more of a value range.

These hand colored poloroid transfers were done using bristol board, a daylab for processing and colored pencils. I love the way the colored pencils adhere to the image and enhance the colors. It also gives you the opportunity to bring attention to specific areas of your imgages.
